The major GSM networks in the United States are At&t, and T-Mobile. However many prepaid companies are subsidiaries of the big two. T-mobile is the parent company of Metro PCS, and Jitterbug. Cricket Wireless uses AT&T GSM national cell tower network. CDMA is an incompatible network. Verizon, Sprint and US Cellular are the major carriers in the US. CDMA bands used by the different companies are known to be incompatible with one another so if one was to purchase a Virgin Mobile (Sprint) prepaid phone and make the steps to get it unlocked it would still not work on most any of Verizon's networks. GSM is used most worldwide while CDMA is very limited yet has a strong presence in the United States.
