I do not believe its expandable aside from 2 headsets, and yes there is a base which controls your answering machine.

It's been months since I reviewed this, but memory says I had problem with the configuration. I wanted 3 handsets, didn't want to pay for the 4 unit, nor could I purchase the 2 handset and add a single. You should research this further, I just settled for 2.
