No! The T-800 radios work the same as a radio if they are connected to your cellphone using the text communication feature and group location map app or not connected. We have six of these T-800 and can use them either connected or not connected.

No! The app is nifty - it allows you to track the whereabouts of the talkies visually using a map! Doesn't work the greatest tho. But without the app, these are just well built, but average walkie talkies.
