Yes it will work independently as the Mesh is a separate network. I still have some devices running on my old network and extender. But only because I haven't taken the time to change over the network names and password. The mesh is overall much stronger and covers everything inside my house and all over my property.

However, if you go to the product listing page of just the Nest Wifi access point (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/google-nest-ac1200-dual-band-wi-fi-access-point-snow/6382496.p?skuId=6382496), it does show this under the "Features" section of the listing: "Requires either a Google Nest Wi-Fi router or a previous-generation Google Wi-Fi system." And if you go to the Google Store listing for this product (https://store.google.com/product/nest_wifi_learn), you will see the text "Go forward with backwards compatibility. The Nest Wifi router and point work with previous generation Google Wifi." (see attached screenshot)
