This is not a cable modem. This is a wifi router. If you want to purchase your own cable modem, you should contact Century Link and ask for a list of compatible cable modems. However, because you appear to need VOIP telephone service, you might need to use a Century Link modem. Their technical support department should be able to clarify this. If there is a compatible consumer cable modem with VOIP capability, they will be able to tell you the manufacturer and model that meets your requirements. Once you've purchased a compatible cable modem, you will need to contact Century Link technical support to register the cable modem and then you can attach this router to the cable modem. This router with a compatible cable modem should cost less that $150. After that, you will not need to rent equipment from Century Link.
