“I currently use a Nighthawk R-7000 and have some trouble when trying to connect to the internet when outside on our Covered patio. I am assuming that the sun film on the doors hampers signals. Can this extender help? do I place it outdoors ?”

No. An extender will not help. You would need to place the extender on your patio, but if the signal from your router isn’t strong enough to get there, then the extender is useless. I was given the same advice, which I ignored. After two weeks of frustration I exchanged the extender for a mesh system (I went with Orbi), and couldn’t be happier.
