Dear Rich; I think you should move that router from the basement to the first floor. That would work so much better. You may have to have your cable company come and move the wiring to the new position, but it will do wonders. As for the extender, get another one. They are a cheap investment. Netgear has a few different ones. I would get the $100 model for the extender. Best of luck, Consultant Brian
