It is generally best to put a range extender half the distance unless you have an ethernet port in your sewing room. To the best area in your house to place the extender, you can download the app NETGEAR WiFi Analytics to your smartphone. Also, during the router setup, it will list the networks and let you know if the router is too far away from your current wifi. It is a really excellent Range Extender.
