“Do you have to currently have an internet source? Or does this act as wifi? I have comcast internet with a modem could this increase speed or act as my internet source?”

This unit is not a "modem" and requires internet service be provided to it via network cable. You would hook this to your Comcast unit and turn off the WiFi on that Comcast unit. Speeds will remain at whatever level you have contracted from Comcast, although this unit does a better job of providing WiFi signal than the Comcast unit does.
