Powerline adapters use the Line and Neutral wire as a physical connection between the adapter pair - there are newer versions that also use the Ground wire. The P1000 is rated as 1Gbps but real-world speed may be around 400 Mbps. Still, it depends on how you place/ use the adapters - is it on the same power circuit with other 'noisy' appliances? You mentioned that you are connecting to the garage- is the circuit a GFI circuit (should also avoid power strips and/or UPS)? The 100ft distance should not be an issue since the adapters can operate 900-1000ft between the adapter pair, but it also depends on what is between (e.g. breaker boxes, the real wire distances, old wiring, what is operating on the circuit, etc). Overall, a powerline adapter should provide a solid continuous (physical) ethernet connection as compared to a WiFi connection.
