• Of course not, the dvr is the hub for all the camera signals and recording. You could use the cameras for surveillance without recording on an individual basis

• The Night Owl DVR requires power for it to be able to record anything that the cameras capture. We would recommend using a battery back up for the DVR and the cameras to prevent the system from not recording if the system was to lose power.
