“can this system save to a computer at another location? I am worried about a thief ripping the cable or damaging the dvr box.”

I do not know; my camera system is scheduled to be installed tomorrow Dec 9 2017. I did already speak to a customer service rep from Night Owl, though, and they are very helpful. I suggest you go to their website for the contact number and ask your question directly.
