Yes, AF-S type lenses are fully compatible with the Nikon D40 DSLR camera and the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR II lens will work beautifully with this camera. Additionally, this camera model can also use AF and AF-type lenses with some limitations.
