- Answer I can't claim that this is THE best portrait lens. Its focal length and fast aperture make it an excellent one for super detail with a soft, blurred background. Your own skills with lighting and location choice are what will make it a great addition to your lens bag.

- Answer Yes, this lens will work with the D5100 as it has a built-in Silent Wave Motor. The overall image will be cropped due to the D5100 DX sensor but that just means you will be using the sharpest area of the lens. You would also be able to use this lens if you ever decide to upgrade to a full-frame (FX) Nikon camera body.
