Cameras have either auto focus motor built into the camera body itself or utilize the one built into the lens. D3100 is the latter. Thus, the lens that will work on D3100 is identified as AF-S (at least Nikkor lenses) in the model number. If it is only AF or AF G (this is old series) then it won't auto focus on D3100; you have to manually focus.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The included Lens has the Auto-focus mechanisms built in. The Lens will have a (AF) on/off for manual focus control. However, the camera's electronics work through the lens to actually function. When and if you buy additional lens you will want ones that have AF in their product description. Another feature you may consider is the VR feature of the lens. VR stands for Vibration Reduction system and will help you capture those perfect shots. The lens that came with my D3100 had both AF and VR. I believe this is the standard package from Best Buy.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as the D3000 do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No auto focus on the camera. You have to buy new or AF-S lenses for it. In other words, lenses that have auto focus in them instead of the camera. You can use the other lenses, but they will only work manually, which sucks for people with poor vision.
