While there are a number of differences between these two camera bodies, the major difference between them is that the Nikon D7100 has a built-in motor and the Nikon D5500 does not. This means you will have more compatible lens choices with the D7100 than you will with the D5500. Another difference is the number of AF points; D7100 gives you 51 points as compared to the 39 points of focus that you get on the D5500. The D7100 also boasts 6 frames per second compared to the D5500's 5 frames a second in continuous shooting and also has two SD slots for double the memory space. The D5500 only offers one slot for an SD memory card. A couple of features, built-in WiFi and Touchscreen, are only available on the D5500, though a Wi-Fi adapter is available for the D7100 to allow for wireless image transfer.
