The COOLPIX L840 is the perfect beginner camera. The camera has many automated shooting modes that enable you to get great pictures without having to play with too many settings on the camera. It has a 38x optical Zoom NIKKOR lens enables you to get really close to subjects. The camera has a huge tilting 3.0-inch LCD that enables you to get great low and high angle shots.

Very easy to use and great for a kid. Do not expect high quality pictures though.
