  • General
    • Product Name: Refurbished COOLPIX® L840 16.0-Megapixel Digital Camera
    • Brand: Nikon
    • Model Number: 26487B
    • Color: Plum
    • Digital Camera Type: Point and Shoot Cameras
  • Imaging
    • Image Sensor Type: CMOS (CCD and CMOS are the two main technologies used in image sensors. CCD, the older of the two types, turns analog light signals into digital pixels. This conversion happens without distortion, resulting in high-quality images. Newer CMOS sensors use transistors at each pixel to move electrical charges. CMOS sensors are typically less expensive, but also require more light to create distortion-free images.)
    • Image Sensor Size: Other
    • Image Resolution (Display): 4608 x 3456 (Refers to the number of pixels, both horizontally and vertically, used to either capture an image or display it. The higher the resolution the finer the image details.)
    • Zoom Capability: true (This function allows for magnification of the subject.)
    • Digital Zoom: 4x (A digital zoom is accomplished electronically, with no adjustment of the camera's optics, and no optical resolution gained in the process. The existing data is not enhanced or added to, merely displayed at a lower resolution, thereby giving an illusion of an enlarged image.)
    • Optical Zoom: 38x (The optical zoom uses a combination of lenses that magnify the image prior to it being registered at high resolution by the imaging sensor.)
    • Image File Format(s): JPEG, MOV (Standardized software format(s) of storing digital images. The type of format chosen for capturing and compressing the image can determine quality, level of detail, and storage space required.)
  • Focus
    • Autofocus: true (Allows the camera to automatically focus through the lens, rather than by adjusting the lens manually.)
    • Eye Autofocus (Eye AF): false (Automatically seeks out and focuses on the subject's eye and holds it as the camera and subject move and as the photographer shoots at high frame rates.)
  • Exposure Control
    • Shutter Speeds: 1/1500-1 sec; 1/4000 sec. (in continuous shooting mode only); 4 sec. (Fireworks show mode only) (The length of time the shutter remains open when the shutter release is activated, expressed in fractions of seconds. The longer the shutter is open, the more light that is able to be captured by the camera sensor.)
    • Burst Mode: true (Also referred to as continuous shooting. This feature captures multiple shots in rapid succession.)
    • Self Timer: true
    • Shooting Modes: Auto, special effects, smart portrait, short movie mode (Exposure modes employed by the photographer to control the optimal aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and other settings for capturing specific subjects/scenes. Examples include Aperture-Priority, Macro, and Manual modes.)
    • Panorama Mode: true
    • Scene Modes: Beach, moon, sunset, fireworks, close-up and more (Exposure modes with predetermined optimal settings for capturing specific scenes. Examples include Landcape, Portrait, and Sports modes.)
    • White Balance Modes: Auto, daylight, incandescent, fluorescent, cloudy, flash, preset (Settings that calibrates how the color white is rendered in an image/video, reducing the appearance of unnatural contrasts caused by various light sources.)
    • Effective Pixels: 0 megapixels (The actual number of pixels which make up the viewable image.)
  • Lens
    • In-Lens Image Stabilization: true (This feature helps reduce image blurring from camera motion. Lens stabilization means an element within the lens moves automatically to counteract detected motion.)

Q: IS THERE A VIEWFINDER OR DO YOU HAVE TO VIEW PICTURES BY BACK SCREEN ONLY? DO I UNDERSTAND CORRECTLY THAT THIS CAMERA IS CHARGE BY BATTERIES AND NOT A PLUG INTO ELECTRIC / and or COMPUTER, RECHARGEABLE BATTERY? THANK YOU FOR ANY RESPONSE IN ADVANCE...

A: The Nikon COOLPIX L840 digital camera runs on AA batteries and can connect to a computer with a provided USB cable so images can be uploaded. This camera does not have a viewfinder window. All images are viewed on the LCD monitor screen, which is able to be raised, lowered or angled to make viewing easier.

Q: Can up load the pics to my desktop computer?

A: Yes. The Nikon COOLPIX L840 digital camera comes with a UC-E16 USB cable. To upload images just connect the camera with the UC-E16 cable to a computer and turn it on. Images can then be transferred to the computer from the camera. If you are using a memory card you can also transfer the images by taking the memory card out of the camera and placing it in the memory card slot of a computer. To learn more about this camera please contact Nikon Support.

Q: If I were to take a picture of the moon, would it come out blurry as if it were taken on a phone, or would it look like what your seeing?

A: Since you can zoom much farther in, optically, with the COOLPIX L840. The camera has a specific MOON mode that zooms in to 855mm! We would recommend highly that you use a tripod or have the camera on the flat surface. The slower shutter speeds do not lend themselves to hand holding the camera.

Q: What happened to the camera that made it need to be fixed?

A: Refurbished items are any used items Nikon gets which can be returns from dealers, demo models from trade shows or sales people, returns from customers or any other product that has had the original box opened. They may show signs of previous use but are all checked for proper functionality and packaged with all original accessories. Refurbished products come with a 90 day warranty.

Q: Was this refurbished by Nikon? Is it factory sealed?

A: Seems to be refurbished by Best Buy since it was packaged in bubble wrap inside of a box when it was delivered to me. Works great, though. I'm very happy with my purchase and savings over buying the newer model for $300.

Q: Is the view screen angle adjustable like it is on the COOLPIX B500?

A: The Nikon COOLPIX L840 digital camera has a large 3 inch high-resolution tilting LCD that can pull out from the back of the camera body at approximately 90° to allow you to take images from a different angle.

Q: I am looking for a camera that will take nice resolution images for larger prints and will be fast enough for good nature images. Will this do what I want? Thanks for the help!

A: There are modes and settings you can use on the Nikon COOLPIX L840 digital camera to adjust how fast the image is taken. Try a continuous setting in Auto mode for things such as fast moving wildlife. There is also a sports mode will allow the camera to capture about 7 images continuously at a rate of 7.4 frames per second at the 16m size. This camera can create images with a maximum resolution of 4608x3456 pixels (16 Megapixels). To determine print size, divide the resolution by the DPI (dots per inch) that you wish to use for the print. Printing a file this size at 300 DPI would result in a print that was approximately 15.4" x 11.5", while printing at 20 DPI would result in a print that was around 20" x 17.3". Many software programs offer a 'resampling' option which can extend the size of the print without a visible reduction in quality.

Q: Spec says "AC Adapter Compatible", what does it mean, a charger and rechargeable battery comes with it?

A: The Nikon COOLPIX L840 digital camera uses 4 AA batteries and is supplied with a temporary set of AA alkaline-type batteries. They can be replaced with 4 AA alkaline, lithium or EN-MH2 batteries. An optional AC Adapter Battery Charger-73 can charge 4 En-MH2-B4 Rechargeable NI-MH batteries, making the Nikon L840 an AC-Adapter compatible camera.
