  • QuestionDo I need to buy an external flash for best pictures? I am a novice. I have a D5100 DSLR. Is the camera flash ok? Please advise. Thanks.

    Asked by Anne.

    • Answer It varies on what pictures you want to take. I personally never use the built in camera flash. Most built in camera flashes work well for your average flash needs, but I hate the effect it gives. To me, the built in flash makes the picture look flat, as well as its a hard light that shows oils and other imperfections. With external flashes like the SB-700 you have the ability to indirectly illuminate your subject in a variety of ways causing a softer, more creative lighting situation (having the ability to "bounce"). That's why I like external flashes. If you are just a novice; the SB-400 is probably the best way to go. Its a great little flash as well as cheaper then your average speed light. It also has bounce capabilities in 4 steps up to 90 degrees (even though its not 360 degrees of pure swivel like the SB-700 its a great flash). Its light, small, and easy to use all while giving you great pictures when a flash is needed.

    Asked by Link.

    • Answer The flash will work on any Nikon DSLR hotshoe. For plug and play, just set the flash on TTL. I'm pretty sure there are people that have better answers than me. But, that is the short answer.
