“I have the Onkyo tx-656 set it up but unlike the other older 3 Onkyo's I can't change the display info from the input name as displayed to the sound info being output!. If I push the I button it will show the sound info but then reverts back to the input”

If you go in the "settings", and go to option 4 (source), there is a "name edit" option. You can rename any of the inputs to show whatever you want. Hope I understood your question correctly.
