So after owning second hand and hand me downs, I finally decided to let loose of some money and buy a new system. I was originally going to go with Klipsch, but I’m glad I made this choice instead. I enjoy the mids, and highs the speakers produce (The sound fills our space with no problem. We live in a 1400 soft Townhouse). I spent multiple hours with the “burn in”, and there is a great quality of sound that they reproduce.
I purchased four of the towers, a couple bookshelves, and center (I already had a nice subwoofer). I married them up with the Onkyo TX-NR656 (7.2 ch) receiver. It pushes all of the speakers with no problems. I like having the Onkyo App on my phone, and being able to turn the system on from our bedroom before I roll out of bed.
As of yesterday I finished off our entertainment area with the Samsung UN65MU8000 television. Everything looks and sounds great!!
I would definitely purchase again, and recommend to a friend.

When I was looking for a receiver I knew I wanted one that supported 4k, HDR, and Atmos. I was VERY pleased with how this Onkyo performed for me. Replacing my old SONY receiver, but keeping the same speakers, I surprisingly heard a difference in quality .
The smart features are decent, didn't really use them, but it is nice that it offers both chromecast and apple airplay. There is a sound profile/mode for everyone, this receiver really covers all the basis.
This receiver drove my 3 Polk Speakers tremendously and delivered high quality and loud sounds. Movies did feel a bit more immersive.
WIth 3 HDR ports and about 6 ports in general. You can be sure you can plug all your entertainment gear into the receiver. NO degradation of quality or sacrifices as this supports the latest HDR standards and 4K. Playing PS4 Pro on this was a dream.
Very happy with the overall performance of the receiver and look forward to growing my home theatre with this powering my speakers.

I have only had this amp for about a month but in that time i have loved it. There are many features to play with and plenty of power for most speakers.
Only con I have for now is that it has a random clicking. This sound does not come through the speakers so it isn't that bad and I will live with it.

I just upgraded to a new OLED 4K TV but my old Bose system receiver was fairly old, proprietary and was only capable of pushing 1080p. So it was time for a full upgrade. I went with this receiver because I can use the HDMI ARC port. The have a single connection to the TV and then into the receiver itself. Then everyone of my devices just plugged into the receiver. This makes cable management look nice and clean as well. The receiver automatically switches between inputs depending on which device you turn on which is really convenient, instead of having to grab the remote control and do it manually each time you wanna watch 4K Blu-ray or play video games. You can also connect via Wi-Fi and do software updates, connect your phone via Bluetooth and stream your playlist right to your home theater. You can also give you inputs custom display names as well. The Onkyo is stacked with features and I am happy with the purchase. I am sure I am going to get many years of use out of.

The receiver is complex with many functions and options, but is straight forward in its configuration and operation. It produces excellent sound ranges and the video 4K Ultra HD output is exemplary.

Happy to see the analog phono plug ins for my many vinyl records.
iPhone synced immediately for Pandora and my music. However, my iPad still can't communicate, sadly.
ARC syncs my directv with receiver for one remote volume control, very convenient.

I am less than happy with this purchase. The Net part of the system has been sketchy at best. Spotify does not work 80% of the time. It has difficulty connecting to my media server and also to my remote app. The last firmware update does not allow me to go into the settings so now a little after two year my $400+ receiver s close to useless.
It has been a love hate relationship with this unit from purchase and I really wished that I had taken it back after I first purchased it. I kept hoping that the next firmware update wold some some of the reliability issues. Well...I guess that is has because now after 2 years it is going to the electronics recycler and I am looking for yet another receiver hoping that the next one will last more than two years.

Great receiver if you looking for to start or upgrade your current system as I did start with this one. It has more than the desired amount for a seven speaker surround system.

So far, I love this receiver, the setup on this is really cool. I'm amazed at how electronics just seem to get cheaper and cheaper. 30 or 40 years ago a receiver with this much power would have cost thousands of dollars. Remember how much a big flat screen cost back in 2010? I do have this receiver hooked up to a surround system that consists of Polk SDA-CRS left front and right front speakers I bought over 30 years ago with a polk center channel speaker, a Polk 10 inch Sub, and a set of Dayton 3 way in wall speakers. This setup will grab the attention of my neighbors 4 houses down from mine. Although I don't jack the volume like I used to, I'm sure this will surpass my wildest expectations.

I am absolutely thrilled with this receiver. I made this purchase to replace a Sony receiver that I really liked, however, it had become a bit outdated since I need something with 4k pass through. The Sony had replaced a Pioneer that I also loved. This Onkyo blows them both out of the water. It is incredibly easy to use and has every option you could dream of, including 6 hdmi inputs with 2 out. The AirPlay and Bluetooth compatibility also work great. I have it set up as a Dolby Atmos 5.2.4 configuration, and couldn't be happier with the quality of sound. I can't imagine needing anything more than this. I took a shot on it when Best Buy had it marked down to $250, but knowing now how good it is, it's definitely worth the normal $399 price.

My last receiver died unexpectedly a month ago and it left me with a home theatre system without any way to play it. I went and reviewed the receivers on the market from Yamaha, Onkyo, and Sony and for the money this was one least expensive. It even had a Black Friday special price. It had 2 zones, sufficent power to drive my system, handles 7.2, had 8 HTMI inputs, was easy to set up, good reviews. I have had it for several weeks now and it meets all my needs and expectations

Early black Friday special that I was able to snag for just a few hundred dollars. It has everything that one would want in a starter receiver, including: bluetooth capabilities, wifi access, multi zone capability, good sound, nice look, etc. I do not know what more could be put on this receiver for the price and most are $500+ for the extras it has. Will not be disappointed unless you are looking for extreme sound, then do not waste your time and spend $1000.

...Just ordered another earlier today for a friend for Christmas!
I have always been an Onkyo owner and think highly enough of the brand to have bought several of their products over the years for myself, family and friends. This purchase is for my older brother and his wife and from what they tell me so far they REALLY like it!
I own an Onkyo TX-NR818, a Denon AVR-X4300H and a Pioneer Elite SX-N30 and now my older brother and his wife own this excellent new TX-NR656 as an upgrade to their older Pioneer AV Receiver. They are both thrilled and impressed with it's capabilities and I would think that you will be too. Plenty of power over multiple channels, the latest codecs for film and built-in Wifi and Internet Tuner for the THOUSANDS of stations available via the Internet!
As I said in the beginning, I just purchased another at Best Buy for friends and they are in for a treat! This device is perfect because it has built-in WiFi, an Internet Tuner and plenty of digital, HDMI and analog (including a phono input!) for just about anyone's needs.
A fantastic piece of kit that I highly recommend! You cannot go wrong with Onkyo and Best Buy. I have zero hesitation in recommending both the brand and the store that sells it, Best Buy.

I bought some Atmos speakers and therefore *must* upgrade the head unit in order to drive the new top/ceiling firing speakers. So when this unit went on sale for black Friday, it became my first purchase (online, of course, who waits in lines anymore?). It arrived that Friday (awesome delivery service, better than Amazon, even) and out it came the box, since I already had 7.1 previously, this meant two of the side firing speakers are now obsolete (guess I can pay more for 9.1 or 9.2 but that's another review, another time, later, maybe). The setup was fast and accurate. Plugged in the included microphone, everything went smoothly and as expected. Coupled with ACR, everything literally just fired up and worked. It work so smoothly and I was up in Dolby Atmos goodness in less than 10 minutes. In fact, I kind of missed the old days of scouring the internet to find out why my brand spanking new system isn't working the way I expected. I must commend the industry for standardizing and Onkyo designed to not take too many exceptions to "value add" on paper when in really merely made equipment from disparate manufacturers more difficult to work with. Well, off the soapbox and that is not the case with this unit. The installation experience was just smooth, seamless integration with everything else, all from different manufactures. I cant commend it enough for the fact that this receiver just works and I can enjoy the purpose of the receiver, not the experience of trying to correct something that should have been working in the first place.

This was my second Onkyo receiver. I needed a 4K receiver I looked at this model's specifications, and it had EVERYTHING I needed. Its price point was much lower than premium models with very similar specifications.
The ONKYO met or exceeded all of my expectations. The audio was ample, crisp and clear including the subwoofer output.
It played all of my 4K HDR titles no sweat. The 8 input HDMI set up was a breeze, a definite improvement over my previous receiver. As soon as I brought it up, it found my network and did a software update effortlessly.
The ONKYO TX-NR656 has not disappointed in any way. I can recommend it without reservation to anyone who needs a state-of-the-art 4K UHD receiver with ATMOS and HDR. It is the most bang for the buck out there.

Having been a fan of another brand(Sony, lol) for many years I decided to replace my still working Sony receiver a new Sony receiver. Total mistake. Fast forward 2 years and I see the Onkyo NR656 on sale. Got it, hooked it up and all my Audio troubles went away. Easy to set up, 4K HDR Pass Thru, I love it over my other brand named one. For the price you can’t beat it imo. Hooked up to Klipsch speakers.

This receiver is great for the money. Plenty of power, and it sounds great. The built in blue tooth is awesome and makes things easy. I wish it had an amp pre out so you could amplify certain speakers when running digital audio (zone 2 preout does not give signal to an amp when running blue tooth or hdmi pass through). All around a solid product that a mid level audio person would like.

This was my first A/V receiver purchase. Specs are excellent for a mid level receiver. I needed to buy new speakers because my old HTIB speakers were only 3 Ohms. The new ones are rated 20W above this receivers 100W @ 8ohm maximum. However, even if your existing speakers are rated less than that, this unit has a setting that allows you to set a maximum volume that prevents them being blown out. Another feature my old HTIB lacked is that you can edit the on screen connections. Instead of Games, you can put PS1 or instead of Streaming Box, you can put Roku. Onkyo has done a really nice job with the TX NR656, especially at a pricepoint of $250-$300. I'm more than satisfied. Like I said earlier, you can spend more for a 7.2 receiver but why?

My old Onkyo home theather receiver fried after 7 years of extensive daily use. Got this new Onkyo model and is even better than my old one. Sound is excellent and has other new features too. Got it on sale at half price so very happy with the price too.
My only complain is the zone 2 is not as easy to activate and deactivate as it was on my previous model. This nee remote control has a function mode for that and you have to do a few steps in order to turn on or off the zone 2. Before it had a specific button for it and was way easier. I had problems trying to turn zone 2 off sometimes. Other than this its an excellent receiver.
