QuestionRegarding Zone 2 speaker operation, how does the Onkyo 656 differ from the 757? They indicate different descriptions, referencing an A/B switch on the 757. .
- Answer The 757 accommodates two pairs of zone2 speakers, zone2A and zone2B. The 656 only accommodates one pair of zone2 speakers. The A/B switch on the 757 allows you to turn both zone2A and zone2B off, play only zone2A, play only zone2B or play both zone2A and zone2B. On the 656 the single pair of zone2 speakers are either on or off. On both receivers you can only use the zone2 functions if you use 5.1 sound in the main listening room. The two amplifiers that are not used in the main listening room are used for zone2. If you use 7.1 sound in the main listening room then then all seven of the amplifiers are used in the main listening room and zone2 is not available.
QuestionDoes this receiver have an graphic equalizer? Or, does it just have preset sound modes?

QuestionIs this receiver capable of 7.2.2 or do I have to decide between 5.2.2 and 7.2?
- Answer 5.1.2 or 7.2
QuestionCan I use my old onkyo speakers with this unit? My speakers are Onkyo SKB-540 with max 130W 8 impedance.
- Answer Sure. Power specification that you see for speakers (measured in watts) is referring to how much power the speaker is designed to safely receive from an amplifier before it will start to distort. Onkyo rates their receivers at 6 ohms impedance [i guess to make them look better ]. At 8 ohms impedance the 180w/channel txnr 757 is actually making 127watts/channel. the txnr 646 rated at 170 watts/channel at 6 ohms but is making closer to 110 watts/channel at 8 ohms.
QuestionHow do I use the Dolby Atmos technology? When I change listening modes "Atmos" is never a choice.
- Answer Go into your settings and set it to 5.1.2, 7.1.2 or whichever you want. Any of the ones ending in .2 are atmos. You should check out the manual.
QuestionCan I use my old 5.1 speakers to 7.2 onkyo 656 receiver?

QuestionWe just purchased this 656...... sounds ok, however the spoken word is so quiet and the action scenes so loud it's a problem, I'm not an expert at setting these systems up and I have always had Yamaha equipment..... Can anyone lend a hand? Thank you
- Answer DID YOU USE THE CALIBRATION SETUP. TRY THAT IT MIGHT SOUND BETTER. IT HAS TO ADJUST TO YOUR ROOM SETTINGS. IF YOU MOVE SPEAKERS AROUND YOU HAVE TO RECALABRATE.

QuestionI have a LG 4k with an ARC HDMI port and also a Dish Hopper 3, I have tried to run an HDMI port from my receiver to TV (ARC) port which I get no sound. I have to use my internal speaker on my TV. What am I doing wrong? No pic unless I run ARC to hopper
- Answer This is how it should be connected. Your dish hopper should have an HDMI cable connecting it directly to one of the inputs on the receiver. Preferably the input labeled “CBL/SAT.” Now connect the television to the HDMI output on the receiver. Although I suspect you wired your hopper right to the TV and are using your AV receiver in a configuration more similar to that of sound bar. Which, don’t get me wrong, will work just fine as well. If that’s how you have it connected and you aren’t getting any audio to the receiver, then it’s probably because you need to go into the television setup and change the audio output to the peripheral device perhaps. Although with the ARC it doesn’t usually require you to do that I don’t think. Anyways if that doesn’t work, just connect everything like I mentioned up above in the first paragraph and it should work perfectly.
QuestionHi, I'm about to move to Europe soon. will this product work with european electricity? Thanks.
- Answer Hi So this unit is 110volt and 60hz only. If your European supply is 220v at 50hz, then this unit will not work. Some people use a step-down transformer to power up the 110v equipment, but then you'll have the cycle difference (60hz vs 50hz) which will burn up the amp eventually. I would recommend you pickup the European model or one with built in dual voltage operation..
QuestionHi All - I am trying to build a 7.1 Home theater, will this Receiver TX-NR656 work with Klipsch Reference RF-82 II, i dont want to burn the Receiver or Speaker. Please help
- Answer Of course. The receiver is not picky on speaker loads. This receiver has power so if your turn it up loud it can possible blow the speakers but that would be your fault not the receiver.
QuestionCan this be used with Harman Kardon HKTS 30BQ 5.1 Home theater with following specs: Speaker Nominal Impedance - 8ohm, Speakers maximum recommended amplifier power - 120w, Subwoofer maximum recommended amplifier power - 200w
- Answer The receiver does 100W/Ch at 8 Ohms (120W dynamic "short term" power to front pair) It only has a pre-amp outputs (2 RCA) for the subs. You need a powered sub.
QuestionThe TXNR 656 has 7 speaker terminals (for my 7.1 system) and separate zone 2 terminals (for my deck area sound), but the information seems to indicate that when zone 2 is used, my 7.1 living room setup will revert to 5.1. Correct?
- Answer That is correct. The receiver only has seven amplifiers. In a 7.1 setting all seven amplifiers are used in the main listening room and zone2 is not available. If the main listening room is 5.1 then there are two amplifiers not used in the main listening room. These two amplifiers are then available for zone2.
QuestionYoutube videos sound phenomenal on this receiver at volume level 50 but when you watch Netflix I have to raise volume to 70. Does any one know?
- Answer The bandwidth of the signal, though audio is severely compressed to begin with, is not expanded during playback; allowing for noise and loss of signal. NETFLIX is not known for a high fidelity audio signal to begin with. The only way to dress up the audio signal would be with significant processing, such as with a DBX 3 or 4 expander; which are not available anymore.
QuestionWill the USB port play MP4 music or at least will the MP3 contents appear on the TV screen so that the desired piece in the contents can be played?
- Answer I believe the answer is ...."Yes" I have all my Cd's ripped onto my computer and copied to a flash drive. Both Mp 3 & Mp 4 songs. I have also for another reason for myself have scanned the CD art work for all my CD's and incorporated them with each Cd. The art work does show on the screen. You use Net to access the flash (USB) drive and you can access individual CD's and then each track on the CD. I think it is pretty cool since I have already done the leg work for ripping all my CD's into my computer and then saved them to a scan disc for my car.
QuestionCan I use this as a old school set up. What I mean by that is can I have just two front and two rear speakers that are all set up with high low and mid range in one speaker box
- Answer Yes, you can run a 4 speaker stereo system by assigning the back surround amp to Speaker B. You also have a 15 Band EQ to play with, along with a "Theatre Dynamic" soundfield for stereo speakers that I like.
