  • QuestionWhat is the difference between the Onkyo NR838 and Onkyo NR 747? Why the price difference and which one is higher end?

    Asked by BigO.

    • Answer The NR838 provides more watts of total power than the 747, and is rated for 6ohm minimum impedence. Also, the 838 provides support for THX Select2 Plus audio technology which is a type of surround sound codec. It also has an onboard DAC which converts digital signal to analogue which can improve the quality of sound when using a pair of headphones or running the signal through a dedicated headphone amplifier. The additional power and extra features are likely the reason for the price difference between the NR 838 and 747 models. What is best for your situation depends primarily on your existing equipment and how you intend to use it. Depending on what type of speakers you have, the setup of your viewing/listening area, and your listening preferences you may or may not need the extra power. If your speakers are rated at 6 Ohms by the manufacturer you may want to lean towards the 838. If you anticipate using headphones or a headphone amplifier you may also lean towards the 838. Hope that helps.

  • Questionwhich is better between the TX-NR646 and the NR747?how much of a difference is between onkyo nr646 and the nr747? Is the 10 additional watt/per channel in the nr747 significantly or noticably different?

    Asked by Anonymous.

    • Answer Hello, Anonymous. The answer depends on your room's size. While 10 additional watts/channel will make a difference with fairly large rooms, most HT rooms are of a standard 14' x 20' size and 10 more watts won't make that much of a difference there. Unless the room is in a noisy environment (you'd have more problems than just watts/channel, in that case), you won't miss that difference. However, the big differences are in other areas. For instance, if you have 4-ohms speakers, the TX-NR646 is not certified for 4-ohms speakers, whereas the TX-NR747 is. Another strong point is that the TX-NR747 is THX certified which will make a noticeable difference for your movie/gaming experience. THX performs over 2,000 tests on a receiver before it receives its certification and the resulting modifications to the receiver's delivered soundfield is superb. The THX Loudness Control feature alone would be worth its weight in gold for customers that live in a condominium, townhome or apartment, as that setting ensures that loudness levels can be set to where they won't make neighbors knock on the wall and you can still hear dialogue in movies clearly. There are many other differences between the two models but those are a couple of the main points.
