Can these receiver be configured to 7.1.2 instead of 5.2.4 atmos? Wouldn't wanna waste my surround back speakers for the sake of having 4 atmos speakers null

Yes they can. However, when you are going through the setup menu, you have to choose the correct setup as there are many speaker placements (ceiling, walls, ... etc). You keep scrolling through to get the setup you want. Setup shows a pictorial on your TV to let you choose your specific configuration. In my case, I have 9 speakers (8 and 9 are the top firing speakers) which you can see from the diagram on the TV. They are labeled height speakers and can be put in the ceiling or can be attached high on the wall next to the ceiling. My top firing speaker are built in to the front speaker and I missed the the correct pictorial the first time.

There is a microphone that comes with the unit that you place in the main listing location (you attach it to a camera tripod). The first thing the amp does is go around and test the speakers. Then it will tell you what speakers are not working (this is how I found out I didn't choose the correct configuration and I had a back speaker where the wire got disconnected. After this, the amp calibrates the speakers relative to your listing position. Next, it has you move the microphone to a secondary listing position and it calibrates the amp for this. Finally, it calibrates a third listening position. All of this takes around 15 minutes as the amp is adjusting each speaker and equalizing/compensating for the rooms reflections. I have had mine only a few weeks, but I am really happy with it. Hope this helps as I was in the dark too.

Yes, this has multiple configurations. If you don't have Atmos, no worries. I don't, and it works fine. I have a conventional 9.1 system and the auto set up did an amazing job.

Yes. 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos is super easy to set up up . Just follow the on screen menus during setup. Had mine set up and running in about 30 minutes
