Great Receiver packed with extras!
||Posted .Had to replace my Denon AVR 987 so I could support the new ARC HDMI protocol with my new Sony TV - it’s about the only one that still supports upscale from RGB to push to HDMI. Easy setup and plenty of upgrades for a total tech home.

Great 9.2 receiver for the price
||Posted .I have an existing 7.1 theater setup. In order to add Atmos support, I will need minimum of 9.1 Atmos receivers. Majority of such receivers are well into > $1000 range. This receiver is half the price and still offers many of the same features. The setup and menu systems are simple and easy to use. I also like the fact that there is no video upscaling or processing, a feature I often need to disable in my previous receivers. I setup mine as 7.1.2 and both Atmos and DTS:X suounds fantastic. I had some trouble playing Google Cast audio on zone 2 automatically while leaving main zone playing other audio sources. But I don't use cast feature much. You can't go wrong with this receiver for the money.

Love Onkyo
||Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed.I almost purchased the Pioneer VSX-LX303 but, then I came across a clearance deal on this Onkyo TX-NR787 from another local store. Since up until a few weeks ago Onkyo owned Pioneer, both are comparable. I would've preferred the Pioneer only for it's ability to upscale video to 4K. However, I called Best Buy, told them of the competitor pricing, they verified and price matched. Sweet! This is the third Onkyo receiver I've owned over the past 15 years and as expected this one does not disappoint. I am now running a 7.2.2 setup. Ran the multipoint calibration and wow! I had no idea what a difference Atmos makes. I have read elsewhere of complaints of voice dialog being too low on the center channel even after calibration. This is easily resolved by increasing the decibel value under the menu option for level. Aside from this, this receiver packs a punch. My suggestion, if you are looking for a mid level THX Select 9.2 receiver and not looking for additional channel preouts, get this before it's gone as these are selling out, as they are clearanced at this time in favor of the newer 2019 model replacing it. And as always, thank you Best Buy!

Upgrade of my audio to match new 4K video
||Posted .Had some issues getting ARC to function properly. Got resolved with assistance of Onkyo customer service. Some controls are somewhat buried and some default settings caused issues. Everything has a learning curve. It found MyCloud HD to stream my digital audio easily. Set it up in a 5.2.4 height configuration. ( the 2 subs really are 1 ch.) Still experimenting with bass management settings. It was one of a few that also had phono inputs.

Great receiver and features for the price
||Posted .Purchased this model to replace my 4-year-old Sony STR-DN1040. That was a great receiver, but couldn't do Dolby Atmos, and also could not pass through HDCP 2.2 4K content, so I got this bad boy as preparation for getting a 4K TV in the near future. Because I still only have it hooked up to a 1080p set, I can't comment on it's 4K performance, but I expect it would be fine based on other reviews I have read. I have the receiver set up in a 7.1 + 2 configuration, with the +2 being the Zone 3 speakers, which I wanted because my basement is split into 2 areas (entertainment room and game room) and I wanted to be able to turn on and off the speakers to the game room. This configuration works fine, but the effort to activate Zone 3 requires one of two things: 1) Go up to the receiver and press the Zone 3 button to turn them on, and then make sure the source is selected, or 2) Fiddle with the remote, which doesn't have enough buttons, to get the remote to control Zone 3 and not the primary Main zone. To control either Zone 2 or 3 with the remote, you have to hold down one button while also pressing the Zone button of your choice. To switch back, you have to go through a similar procedure. Couldn't Onkyo just have added a few more buttons to the remote? Also, because of the wonky remote, it is difficult with program any of that functionality into a universal remote like Harmony without some serious programming. Otherwise, I like everything else about the receiver so far.

Nice all around receiver
Posted .I purchased this unit after first having the Denon AVR1295W. I changed the Denon out for this unit due to this one having more power. Let me just say that the difference was immediate with the same speakers and all. It has nice clean highs/lows and plenty of power to spare on my 8ohms speakers. The setup was very simple going through the menu and straightforward and for all the features you get for the money, this unit has a fantastic price. You're getting a 9.2 receiver and no other receiver with this many channels is available for this price. It passes 4k HDR/Dolby Vision content without any hiccups and supports Dolby Atmos, DTS X and all the major formats. If there were a negative I have for this unit, then it would be the fact that you have to press the Info button on the remote to see what digital audio format is coming into the receiver. Otherwise, it only shows the source on the display. This may not be a big deal for some but I like for the format of the audio from the source to show instead of the source and I found no way to change this in the settings. This is my only negative and for most, I'm sure this just comes down to a personal preference. The bottom line is this, you're getting a nice all around receiver for the money with all the latest audio formats supported, 4k HDR/Dolby Vision passthrough and 9.2 channels. (Subwoofer preout is the same signal split between two outputs if you want to do 9.2) I haven't seen these amount of features for the price.

Excellent Open Box!
||Posted .This Onkyo TX NR787 was an open box deal. Normally retailing for @$649- I got it for $503+tax. So I was able to purchase this 9.2 channel THX certified surround theater Dolby rated receiver for the price of a top of the line 7.2 system but with two more channels of 100w@8ohms so this system really has 900w@8ohms and then two preamp subwoofer outs for subs-also at 8 ohms but most likely not 100w but rather modulated by the volume controller on the Onyo unit so as to prevent the sub(s) from out competing the mains.. Great sound in all of its modes. I love all the extra channels beacause I'm not using it for home theater but to run and feed many components of a massive 40,000watt pa system. And it's well connected with every media stream format or inputs you can conceive. Great Unit! 6 out of 5 stars ******!

Q: QuestionCan these receiver be configured to 7.1.2 instead of 5.2.4 atmos? Wouldn't wanna waste my surround back speakers for the sake of having 4 atmos speakers
Asked by NogNog.
- A:Answer Yes they can. However, when you are going through the setup menu, you have to choose the correct setup as there are many speaker placements (ceiling, walls, ... etc). You keep scrolling through to get the setup you want. Setup shows a pictorial on your TV to let you choose your specific configuration. In my case, I have 9 speakers (8 and 9 are the top firing speakers) which you can see from the diagram on the TV. They are labeled height speakers and can be put in the ceiling or can be attached high on the wall next to the ceiling. My top firing speaker are built in to the front speaker and I missed the the correct pictorial the first time. There is a microphone that comes with the unit that you place in the main listing location (you attach it to a camera tripod). The first thing the amp does is go around and test the speakers. Then it will tell you what speakers are not working (this is how I found out I didn't choose the correct configuration and I had a back speaker where the wire got disconnected. After this, the amp calibrates the speakers relative to your listing position. Next, it has you move the microphone to a secondary listing position and it calibrates the amp for this. Finally, it calibrates a third listening position. All of this takes around 15 minutes as the amp is adjusting each speaker and equalizing/compensating for the rooms reflections. I have had mine only a few weeks, but I am really happy with it. Hope this helps as I was in the dark too.
