“Is the texture of the case smooth or does it have some grip to it?”

It is definitely NOT smooth. The case has quite a bit of texture to it and has a pleasing tactile feel to it. I have used a few other Otterbox Defender cases in the past and this model is the most textured by far. Hope this helps.
