“All incoming calls go directly to the answering machine before we can answer them. We've set the ringer to 4 rings before the answering machine should pick up. We have done this several times but the setting gets ignored. Help!”

Is it possible that you subscribe to Voicemail (confirm) with your phone company? if this is the situation your Answering machine needs to be set to less Rings than the Voicemail, to allow callers to leave a message on your Answering machine.
