Excellent question. You should be connecting this directly to your receiver. If you connect it to your TV first and then have the TV send the audio to the receiver, you will not be able to get the hi def audio files. TV out audio currently only sends 5.1 channels. Unless your TV uses eARC and your receiver also uses eARC. 99% of TVs at the moment do not use eARC. If you are sending audio from the TV to the receiver using HDMI, it's more then likely only ARC, not eARC. If you are using optical out, you will not receive anything over 5.1 channels. So, just connect it directly to your receiver to make life easier and get the full audio as it was meant to be played.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Mine is working fine for both audio and video through a single HDMI cable. My hookup is slightly different from yours in that I connect mine directly to a smart TV that has an HDMI-audio return channel (ARC) that sends the audio to my A/V receiver. I surmise that the purpose of the audio-only HDMI output is to provide audio to an A/V receiver in the situation where you wish to run the video directly to a TV that doesn't have the ARC capability. Since your intent is to send both video and audio through your receiver, I see no reason to use the audio-only HDMI out.
