“The light bulbs worked fine with just Alexa on/off and dim/brighten.. What does the bridge get me? Also, if I connect the light bulbs to the bridge can I still place them in a room and say "Alexa lights on" and all of the lights in my current room come on”

Google home and Philips bridge work seamlessly together. Most likely the same for Alexa. The bridge I operate Philips hue app and color scenes. When I am away from home I log into the Philips home app and control my lights.
