This will work without the sync box. All you have to do is download the Philips Hue Sync app to your computer. If you have a PC connected to your TV, and you are streaming your videos through the PC, the box is totally unnecessary.

But during set up it asks about connecting to the sync and Philips website says the sync box, alongside the bridge, is required.
