It mates to your phone automatically when you connect to the USB port in the front. After that, as soon as you get in the vehicle and turn the radio or CD on, it connects to the Bluetooth on your phone. When you get a call, the volume on the radio goes low and you can answer by punching the "Phone" icon on the front of the stereo. You have a mini-microphone which in my case was installed behind my steering wheel.
