Yes, it does require an tablet. Can be android or Ipad. Based on my experience, the newer the tablet, the better as the app is process heavy. The Globe is just a piece of plastic. No battery or anything required. In low light, it will make the task of scanning the Globe very frustrating. FYI, several countries are missing. I returned mine cause of that.
