The tricky part is to clone the old drive so that the new drive appears identical to your computer. I have had problems where the 'clone' didn't work right and the cloning software made the old hard drive unbootable. I had to start over and completely rebuild the system. In the end, I lost a lot of personalized elements of the old system. SO, the answer is PROBABLY, in most cases, YES. Make a complete backup of your old drive before you start.
