I definitely think that these games would not be too difficult for him to understand. I loved Pokemon when I was that age. The game walks you through what to do next via the storyline so I would recommend getting these games for him. The only difference between playing it on 2dsxl and 3dsxl is that the 3dsxl has 3D graphic compatibility (at least on the top screen and not touch screen).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The storyline in these games is easy to follow. The people in the game that you meet and talk with provide directions and the map on the bottom screen marks your next objective with a red flag to help keep you on track. As with any Pokémon game, there is a lot of conversation. It is important to read everything in order to get the story details. The reading level required is not high so that should be ok but some patience is required. Pressing the "A" button to bypass text may lose some of those details. Finally, only specific sequences are in 3D so nothing significant is lost playing in 2D. I hope your grandchild loves the game. It is a wonderful series and this is one of the best games in it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. As long as he is doing ok with reading he will understand the game just fine. The only difference between the 2dsxl and the 3dsxl is the 2ds does not do 3D, but that’s ok. Most of us don’t use it and it’s not recommended for younger children to use the 3D.

The tutorials are very helpful and the progression of the game makes it easy for kids to understand the basics and then to more complex move set. For the difference in 2DSXL vs 3DSXL, its the same regarding the game experience. =)
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I think he shouldnt have a problem. There is definitely a level of pokemon games that can be difficult if you want to be a competitive online player. As for just playing the game I think he should be fine. Also the difference between the 2DS XL and 3DS XL is basically the 3D slider that allows some games to be viewed in 3d. The 2DS is basically the same system just 2D and no 3d Capability
