I can't say how much volume you'll get as I don't know how many watts your laptop can supply to drive the speakers. I've been an audiophile for 40 years, so I like to experiment. I would not recommend running the laptop volume wide open on speakers with low wattage input as it can cause the speakers to clip which is not good for speakers. Just keep the volume reasonable and you should be fine. You'll be able to tell, if you turn the volume up and it sounds like you think you bought bad speakers then the volume is too high.

These speakers are worthless without one, because they do not have their own independent power source. Once you have an amp, you could connect your mac to the amp and play it through the speakers. Although these Polk speakers are very nice for home audio and surround systems, I might think about investing in a nice speaker like the Bose Revolve+.
