The dash cam itself doesn't have a built-in battery to maintain the date and time stay in the same. So when you turn the car off and on it's like an old school alarm clock every time you plug it back in the time resets back to 12:00 and flashes similar concept. If you get the hard wire kit the camera will always be supplied power from the battery and you won't have that problem. I have been thinking about getting the hard wire kit to eliminate this problem. You also get the added benefits of having the hard wire kit like having the auto detect where the camera will turn on when it senses motion and things like that
