Hi whyme. Good question. Yes, the Ring Motion Sensor requires a Ring Alarm Base Station in order to work. The Ring Alarm Base Station is the center of your entire Ring Alarm security system. The Ring Alarm Motion Detector has multiple motion detection sensitivity settings that can help protect your home or business while avoiding false alarms. These settings are also useful for avoiding false alarms, especially if you have pets. Visit our support center for more information. We invite you to reach out to our Community if any additional information is needed regarding your question. The Ring Community is our first peer-to-peer community forum, giving our customers the ability to help one another by sharing their feedback and experiences with each other. All the best, Nicole from Ring.

I do not have a RING alarm system, but I do have numerous RING cameras, floodlights and chime Wi-Fi chime extenders. There are a few areas outside that I needed a little more motion coverage, so I bought three of these to complete my coverage. In order for the motion detectors to work, you need to purchase a RING BRIDGE and link it to your Ring app. The cost is $49.99 at Best Buy. It’s a very easy process setting it and the motion detectors up. They are a great addition to my RING devises. You can set them up to activate other RING devises that you have when motion is sensed. You can adjust the motion coverage area as well. Hope this helps. I have attached pictures of the RING bridge. As you can see, it plugs directly into an AC outlet. Two of my motion detectors are relatively far from the bridge and still are within range with good connection.
