No you don’t need to but you will only be able to view live video no recording. The monthly fee is 3 dollars for one camera or 10 dollars for unlimited cameras

Once you go live Ring will offer a recording offer for a short period of time. Assuming you don't extend you will then not have any additional fees to pay. I personally didn't take them up on extending because I'm only interested in the "here and now", but like many companies these days - they try to rope you into the subscription loop.
