I think it is a Wifi device. You have to connect it to your Wifi which then sends the signal to your phone app. Range is not an issue. the app works where ever you are.

Ring devices are compatible with wireless routers running 802.11 B,G, or N on 2.4GHz." As a side note: Once you have a wireless internet connection at your Mom's home you will be able to set up your device using the ring app to access the camera so you can keep an eye on her from anywhere (one hour away, two hours away or in the same home). As long as there is an internet connection you can access from your smartphone or any compatible device that has the ring app installed you should be able to access the camera.
