“In my mind, alerts mean that I will get notified of activity, but I don't get any at all for motion. I have to constantly look at my activity log to see what has gone on. This doesn't seem right to me. Am I missing something?”

Make sure you have set it for motion alerts as well as alerts when the doorbell is rung. I actually turned off the motion alerts because I was getting too many alerts and just set it for doorbell rings. Hope this helps you.
