“If I am reading correctly, I do NOT have to have an existing doorbell for Chime to work, correct? My house does not have a doorbell, but I would like to install Chime.”

Correct. The chime can work alone. The chime will become the doorbell. I have a doorbell and the chime works with it and the chime unit is in my bedroom. The chime allows you to here the "doorbell" ring in the event you are not near you phone.
