Technically you do not need a subscription if you only want it for motion notifications in its view, or to answer your doorbell without going to the door. If you want to replay any of the recorded videos it captures, you need the”protection plan” they offer. Not real expensive but still a charge to use any video capture playback. Camera will still record videos and un-answered doorbell rings without subscription, but you can not replay any. At all, without paid subscription.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The basic functions are free (live video feed, motion detection, 2 way radio to speak), but if you want to be able to record or go back and view live feeds, they charge $3/month, or $30/year. They also have a plan for $10/month or $100/year that includes the above services, but also a lifetime protection on unlimited Ring cameras, lifetime product warranty and a discount on future products. The first 30 days after you set-up your Ring, they give you a free trial, and after that, you decide if you want to keep that package or not
