The Ring uses rechargeable battery, internet and cell phone to operate. It does not use existing wiring or your door bell chime. It chimes over your cell phone if someone is in the area of your device or pushes the ring button on the ring device. You can also program to alert multiple phones if you like. It mounts to the exterior wall next to your door. When someone walks past the camera they are immediately recorded and the ring alerts you by notifying you via your cell phone that someone is in the vicinity of your Ring door bell device. If they push the button you will again be notified that someone is at your door. The set up does not take very long and relatively easy.

It even comes with a component for older doorbells. Either way, this is a great system and I think you'll enjoy it. The power charge consumption isn't much as you can charge this through USB (solar,battery, etc.) so it doesn't take much.
