It only records about 5 seconds after motion is triggered without responding to the movement. You can setup so that it will instantly show movement on your mobile phone or tablet. When the view comes up, there is a red and green button on the screen. If the green button is pressed, it will record until the red button is pressed. Also, when the green button is pressed, you can converse with a person that is by the doorbell. There is also configurations on range of field to trip the sensor as well as how you get alerted. The doorbell logs are easy to delete as well.

If you choose to 'answer' the motion notification, it will record until you 'hang-up'. I recorded a 7.5 min video at one point by allowing the video to continue to run when confronted by a difficult neighbor on my front porch. Recordings are saved in the cloud, so running out of memory isn't really an issue. I'm still within the free trial period, though. I'm happy with the length of the device battery life.
