I have a Spectrum cable box that does have a digital audio sound output. I am not using it. I use HDMI cable to the TV from the cable box for the picture and sound, and use the TV's digital audio out sound to my soundbar. That way anything playing on the TV (I also have a BluRay attached to the TV via HDMI) uses the soundbar. The TV has to be set to output the sound to the digital audio sound output to get the soundbar to work.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. When you say you have a cable box and a receiver, are you meaning surround sound receiver? If so you’ll want to connect the Digital Optical cable from your cable box to the surround receiver and then the surround receiver will connect to your tv via an hdmi cable only for the video/picture only.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You will use the HDMI cable to provide video from Spectrum box to the TV. The Optical Cable is for the Audio. This will go from Spectrum box to your receiver. You would not use the sound from the TV.
