“What does "play through design" mean in this case? I'm guessing you can't really use the touch screen with the front cover attached......”

I think play through design means how the case part are or look. You can use the touch screen with the cover on top.

It allows access to your device's ports and controls without removing the case. So you can charge your phone and have access to basic controls without needing to open it.
