You can use either regular or HDMI cable. Take a look at the back of the device to see all ports it has.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, I installed on a 9 year old TV, you just need to get the Roku Express +, which can be difficult to find. It has standard AV/red/while/yellow cords to plug into older TV. The picture isn't as good as HDMI but still works just fine. The Express + will run you about $10 more than the Express.
