You can use either regular or HDMI cable. Take a look at the back of the device to see all ports it has.

USB is for power only. The hdmi carries the data. So not you cannot use the USB to stream or use the roku

The hdmi is for picture and sound. The USB is what powers it. I ran the USB to the port on the tv and it works great. My tv is insignia and not smart.

Yes, I installed on a 9 year old TV, you just need to get the Roku Express +, which can be difficult to find. It has standard AV/red/while/yellow cords to plug into older TV. The picture isn't as good as HDMI but still works just fine. The Express + will run you about $10 more than the Express.

You must use hdmi to connect video and audio. Usb just powers the device.
