It only requires internet so depends on where you live.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can use Roku alone without any cable service provider or you can use it to supplement what you already have. It depends on what you are looking for content wise. In my experience if you want everything (tv shows on multiple networks, sports, movies, etc) then it is more cost effective to have cable or dish and use the roku to supplement that but if you just want select things it's cheaper to do roku alone and just pay for what you want rather than paying for a package, most of which you won't use. Bare bones all you need for it to function is internet access and wifi

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No cable or satellite subscription is required to use this device. It will support standalone subscriptions such as Netflix, Amazon video on demand, Hulu plus, etc. with no cable or satellite subscription required. If you are trying to determine a compatible cable subscription for the device, Time Warner Cable TV and Slingtv.com are both supported by this Roku device.
