Yes, this should provide a definite improvement over your laptop mic. Note that since it is omnidirectional, it will pick up keyboard clicks. Also make sure you select it as the mic source under Sound > Recording if it isn't selected automatically. Since it sounds like you want to record you and not a whole room - should work well.
