I have mine set up "behind" the listener. Most of the top and side Atmos channels come from the acutal soundbar not these rear speakers. I have the HW-Q900A Soundbar and my top/side channels are embedded into the soundbar.

The SWA-9500S features front and top firing speakers, if placed to the left and to the right of the seating you will not experience the full effect. ^Tim
